Art, Hindu Art

Art Sunday with a bit of a difference. These are all images from the Hindu faith. Please don’t think this means I know any thing about Hinduism, I don’t, I just think the images are interesting, often beautiful and nearly always disregarded by the western world. Hinduism sees the whole of creation as the work of three fundamental forces symbolized by three gods, which constitutes the Hindu Trinity or ‘Trimurti’:

 Brahma - the creator,

Vishnu - the sustainer,
and Shiva - the destroyer. This Shiva statue can be found at  Parmarth Niketan Ghat in Rishikesh (India)

Ganesha, also spelled Ganesa or Ganesh is one of the best-known and most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu world .

His image is found through out India and Nepal and is instantly recognisable by  the non Hindu due to his elephants head.

Radha with Krishna
 playing a flute
                                                    Hindu Buddha

There is quite a lot of Hundi art work here to look at

This is Shiva dancing on the demon Apasmara

On this BBC site you can find lots of information about the faith, its history and its beliefs.

Hindu art and the Hindu religion are subjects I've been curious about for decades, but have never had information at hand when I had free time to spend. Thanks for posting this - particularly on a Sunday afternoon when I can actually enjoy perusing!

I think here in the West we tend to overlook a lot of Eastern culture.
Sad as it has much to teach us.
Beautiful collection Thanks

I've always been fascinated by Indian art, particularly Hindu. Having lived in a very multicultural area of Birmingham for many years before moving to Wales, I had an early introduction much of Indian culture....music, movies, art.

I am so tired but I just had to look at these. They are fascinating. Have you ever seen the movie "Mississippi Masala" with Sharita Chodhury and Denzel Washington? Interesting look at culture, racism and love. Little known flick with no publicity, but powerful.
